Olimpia Mailat Gurghian finished her degree studies in Translation and Interlinguistic Mediation in 2019, specializing in French and English as her source languages. During her last year, she chose to focus on the topic of advertising translation for her degree thesis, “La traducción de los spots humorísticos”, which gave her the opportunity to explore the use of humor and comedy in audiovisual advertising, as well as the challenges and restrictions that their translation usually entails. Consequently, she decided to pursue a Master’s Degree in Audiovisual Translation: Localisation, Subtitling and Dubbing, offered by the University of Cádiz and the Instituto Superior de Estudios Lingüísticos y Traducción, thanks to which she was given the chance to deepen her understanding of the translation techniques and strategies used in this discipline, and put them into practice by doing an internship with Bbo Subtitulado, one of the leading translation agencies in the industry. She also pursued the Master’s Program in Advanced English Studies offered by the University of Valencia, through which she learned about the field of (Critical) Animal Studies. In her MA dissertation, “Cultural and Political Importance of Animals in Science Fiction: From Key Concepts to Frank Herbert’s Dune,” she analyzed the figure of sandworms. Her desire to further explore the connections between the field of Animal Studies and science fiction, as well as her personal interest in Herbert’s works, led to her enrollment as a PhD student at the University of Valencia, in the Doctoral Program in Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and its Applications. Her aim is to examine the links between nonhuman animals and human morality in science fiction and, more specifically, the discourses of species and bioethics in the Dune franchise.
