Nuria Máximo Bocanegra is a lecturer at the Department of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine at the Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC) in Madrid, Spain. She completed her training as an occupational therapist in 1995, and began to work as a healthcare professional for children. In 2000 she turned to the field of higher education. During the first few years she combined university teaching with her work in private practice, until she ultimately became a full-time lecturer. She then completed a Master’s Degree on Neurological Pathology at the URJC, with the aim of studying the basis of neurological treatments and their impact on people’s autonomy. In 2010 she defended the first PhD dissertation in Spain on the field of O.T., which employed a historical-documentative approach to the history of the discipline in the country. Given her interest in the latest findings and practice in her profession, she was able to observe how professionals in other countries integrated animal-assisted therapy in occupational therapy, which led to her research and work with her dog, Tatoo. Since 2016 she is the director of the Research Chair “Animales y Sociedad” (“Animals and Society”) at the URJC, which is dedicated to the research, training, and dissemination of respectful and bidirectional forms of interaction between humans and other animals. Aside from collaborating as part of the CULIVIAN research team at the University of Valencia (UV), she is also part of a Consolidated Research Group on the evaluation and assessment of capacity, functionality and disability (“Evaluación y valoración de la capacidad, funcionalidad y discapacidad”), and of the “In-Motion” Group for Innovative Teaching, both of which are based at the URJC. She also serves as advisor in the Research Ethics Committee at the same institution.
